The LAC+USC Healthcare Network Dietetic Internship Program is 48 weeks in length and is designed to provide the intern a wide range of learning experiences to assist with development of knowledge and skills important to entry level practice in dietetics. Upon successful completion of this program, the intern is eligible to apply to the Commission on Dietetic Registration in order to take the registration examination to become a registered dietitian. The dietetic intern will participate in learning experiences in food service systems management, medical nutrition therapy and community nutrition. Experiences are designed to facilitate increasing levels of competence by the intern. In addition to clinical learning experiences, classes are offered on a variety of topics and are designed to augment the clinical learning experiences. In food service system management, the intern will learn the roles of the administrative dietitian or manager and other food service personnel. Experiences are provided in a conventional/cook chill food production system and include kitchen supervision and management. Medical nutrition therapy experiences are provided in each hospital within the Medical Center. The intern will learn the roles of the clinical dietitian in such areas as Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Nephrology, Diabetes, Neurology, Orthopedics, Burns and Intensive Care.
