About Us

The Los Angeles County+University of Southern California Medical Center ranks among the largest acute care hospitals in the United States. Located on a 72 acre hilltop two miles east of downtown Los Angeles, it serves the central region of Los Angeles County, with a population of approximately 1.2 million. In addition, the Medical Center is a referral center for burns, communicable diseases and other types of severe trauma or illness. In case of disaster, the Medical Center is the major emergency resource for both the public and private sectors.

The Los Angeles County+University of Southern California Healthcare Network was founded in 1878 and became affiliated with the USC Medical School in 1885. There are 1,600 volunteer physicians, 450 staff physicians and over 900 residents from all over the country, and 600 medical students. There are 9,000 employees and the average daily census is 1,056.

Currently, the Medical Center consists of two hospitals: (1) General Hospital - contains general, medical, and surgical services including the specialties of Orthopedics, Neurology, Renal, Oncology, Diabetes, Urology and one of the top Burn Centers in the country; (2) Women's/Children's Hospital - includes Obstetrics, Gynecology, Neonatology and General Medical and Surgical services of Pediatrics. Each hospital has its own admitting, emergency and outpatient services. Presently, inpatient care is provided to 72,000 patients annually including births, and records 800,000 outpatient and emergency visits yearly.
As a teaching institution, the Medical Center operates a School of Nursing and a variety of accredited training programs including Dietetics, Physical/Occupational/Speech Therapy and Audiology, Radiologic Technology, Laboratory Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Nurse Midwifery and Physician Assistants as well as programs for resident physicians, interns and student physicians.

The Food and Nutrition Division provides services for the entire Medical Center, producing approximately 4,500 meals per day. The division is managed by Morrison Managemet Specialists, Inc. and is professionally staffed by 29 dietitians and managers.
